T0 RETREAT: fall back, betake oneself.
     And, although Ceasar rarely had to do this himself in a military way, he probably would have defined it much the same way. Two thousand years later, the scene took place at St. Anthony High, not Europe. Amid silence, you, who have been soldiers in the King's army since Confirmation, "betook" yourselves away from English and math, homework and noisy recreation to see how far you had strayed from your General's orders.
     Now, in swing again in a new semester, it is not difficult to forget the resolutions of a three-day retreat; it is not hard to settle back into the old habits that only a few weeks ago you found to be pitted with sin.
     Those three days did offer an opportune time to detect discrepancies that often lead to sin because they are not consistent with the orders of your King.
     You realized then, even as you must continue to realize, that the resolutions of retreat are the all-important factors. You can see that they remain so even now that you are back with English and math, homework and noisy recreation.

Arts, Too

TODAY, a great deal is being said in homes, schools, and government departments concerning the necessity for an increase in the study of science and math by America's youth.
     The unexpectedly swift development of Soviet Russia's scientific advances has thrown a great percentage of the American population into a frenzied demand for increased emphasis on these subjects in the public school system.
     Science and mathematics are tremendously important, but the thinking public would do well to recall that the training of scientists and engineers exclusively has never been the goal of the American educational system.
     We strive to develop the minds and characters of boys and girls and help them to become well adjusted Christian men and women. To do this, we must effectively integrate the study of the social sciences, the natural sciences, jiterature, mathematics, and culture.
     Here in Detroit, little emphasis is placed on social science, literature, or the arts, compared with unusual interest in science and engineering. The one occupation considered by most boys of better than average intelligence is engineering. Other fields are being neglected.
     If interest in social science, political law, creative arts were developed, a more correct rounding out of the youths' minds and personalities would ensue.

For the Dummies

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES are for the browns and the dummies. They have no use and it would be better for the school if they were dropped. For example, the dances need preparation, like selling tickets and decorating, and in the end they succeed only in keeping you up late that night. Sports interefere with your job and homework and the meetings of clubs take away your study periods.
Besides, Blushing Betty is nicer enclosed in her little shell than participating in some project and revealing her pleasant personality ,and Candid Cate could hide her talents instead of being in the play. And couldn't you picture Showoff Sam wrapped up in himself again instead of devoting his time to the school? But the payoff would be if all the Varsity Vies ignored sports. Boy, then this would be a great school.

"Well, hello Bob! You must have known I was getting tired of homework.
"Oh, it's not really that bad, you know, just one of the unpleasant necessities in life.

     Sack dresses, pointed shoes: late 1800 and early 1900. That's the trend of fashions in dresses and shoes. Good or bad? According to SAH they:
     "Could be better but some of the dresses and shoes are nice. It all depends on who is wearing them. I definitely don't like the extreme in either style."
     "On the whole fashions are pretty nice, but I prefer full dresses instead of sheaths or sacks. The pointed shoes are all right if they aren't too high or too pointy. I also like little hats instead of big ones that cover you whole head."

The moon sending up baby earths?

     "When you called? I was more or less memorizing religion essentials, proving a geometry theorem, and figuring out something to write for English. Maverick is on television, too.
      "No, of course you're not bothering me. Whatever gave you that idea?
      "Oh, I usually do my homework on Sunday night. This weekend I went skating, to a party, and a basketball game besides working at the office. Could you wait one minute while I shut off the radio? The news just came on.
      "Hello? Yes, I usually manage to squeeze in homework. Pretty difficult sometimes.
      "No, I can't say it's always right, but they don't check it half of the time, anyway. I hope!
      "No, I never could figure out why they give it to us. Do you know?
      "Well, if you say so. By the way, why the sudden interest in my homework? I don't do it any different than anyone else, do I?"

     "I don't like either sack dresses or pointed shoes. I think full dresses are nicer."
     "As long as the toes aren't turned up I think the pointed toe is nice. It makes the person more dressed up. Sack dresses are swell for the people who can wear them. I think tweed coats with fancy backs are the best. Red should only be used in accessories. For sport, burmudas with leotard and gumdrops are it."
     And for the boys: "The pointed, pinched toes on shoes are no good. The suits and jackets are all right, but I don't like the sparkle ties."
     "I like bermudas on boys but not girls. No knee socks. Pointed shoes are good."

Step into
a Pointed Shoe

     This is the top tune of many a modern miss. Various degrees of points on shoes have sharply affected shoe fashions. Different hues of shoes trimmed with bows, bars, cards, buttons and glittering stone dominate the list of fashion accessories.
     Of the vast array of shoes there are baby points for those who don't care for the current trend to pointed shoes but wear them because it's in fashion. The medium. ones are favorites of those who like points but are a little wary of their effect on feet. Those who are exact followers of the fashions buy the original extremely pointed shoes.
     Whatever your choice and style of shoe you're sure to be in step if the toes are pointed to some degree.

     Rockets, Missiles, and Moons, a timely informative book by Charles Coombs, begins with the story of an actual missile launching at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Illustrated with 79 photographs, the book discusses the rockets and missiles now being used and tested. Mr. Coombs makes technical facts clear to the general reader.
     The favorite funny stories of Ogden Nash are printed as he tells them in his book, I Couldn't Help Laughing. This unique collection of the humorist's old and new favorites is equally delightful for high school boys and girls, their parents younger brothers, and sisters.
     How Skip Turner got his chance to play for little Hillchuck High; how his team battled against heavy odds to win a district playoff and moved on into the state tournament: this is the story of Backboard Magic, by Hoard M. Brier. Skip wasn't good enough for big-time basketball so he was out of Madison High varsity. He settled his disappointment by playing for Hillchuck High which built up a championship team.
     What to do and when to do it? Find the answers to your etiquette questions in Mind Your Manners, by Alien. It is a book you'll not only enjoy but will get something out of that can be put to use.
     "Sister, the Communist police are waiting for you downstairs."
     Sister Cecilia was forced to exchange her nun's habit for ski pants and sweater and leave the hosptial by way of the roof. She

escaped this time and for four months dodged the Communist police. Sister relates her adventurous plight in The Deliverance of Sister Cecilia, as told to William Brinkley.

     Reflecting her life of kindness and devotedness to duty, Sister Mary Ferdinella died suddenly of a heart attack while preparing to go to the Teutonettes' divisional championship game. As athletic advisor. Sister was deeply interested in the girls and their games.
     Though her work had little publicity in the school, those who had Sister in class or knew her through the "A"-Club found in her a good friend. She was always willing to help when asked and very often offered advice and assistance. Her time was the time of her students and the members of the girls' basketball teams.
     Sister lived life the right way. Through holiness and love of God, Sister showed charity towards her students and companions always.
     May she rest in peace!
