Their high school studies and activities were rewarded Monday when exceptional seniors received honors.
The Detroit Police Department Youth Award went to Mary Jo Francis 217 and Dick Kordos 217. American Legion Citizenship medals
were given Paula Faber and Frank Habbel 217.

Seniors plans their last week at SAH to encompass as many activities as possible.
Graduation day, June 7, will be preceded by a week of fun and memories.

Following SAH tradition, seniors began their week by attending Senior Day at U. of D. Memorial Building, May 31. At the close of the program, Benediction is given all participants.

    Cynthia Ranke 218 has the distinction of maintaining the highest scholastic average over four years.
    For being outstanding in Engish, Laurine Bratke 218 was cited. Larry Burcz 215 took the history award,
Larry Schmid 218 the one for science achievement, Kathleen Schrader 216 the math pin, Dick Kordos 217 the religion award, and Cynthia Ranke 218 the Latin one.
    Phyllis Augustyn 217 was named exceptional in commerce, Judy LaFave 217 in shorthand and Lorraine Rogers 218 in typing.
    The Bausch and Lomb Science Plaque went to Frank Habbel 217. Leonard Tomaszek 218 received the industrial art pin, Kathleen Mazzoline 216 the one for voice and Kenneth Janiszewski 216 the one for instrumental music, and Christopher Wrosch 215 one for dramatics.
    For citizenship Lorraine Rogers 218 was cited. Mary Kaschalk 218 and Jim Taube 217 were named all-around girl and boy and Sylvana La Rocca 217 all-around student. Ruth Gaynor 215 and Christopher Wrosch 215 received American Legion certificates.
    Carol Roe 216 and Winifred McCarthy 218 received National Scholastic Press Association star pins for editorship of The Prelude. Peggy Patterson 215 and Phyllis Montie 215 were given honor certificates by the Michigan Press Association.

    To cop the coveted D. A. Lord Award is not an easy task. Only one senior of each graduating class is chosen as outstanding in "virtus et scientia," the School Sister of Notre Dame motto. In honor of Father Daniel A. Lord, S.J., who named The Prelude 16 years ago, the school newspaper founded the award in 1956.
    This year Judy Adams received the pin at Senior Honor Day, Monday.
    An honor student, Judy has been active during her four years at SAH. This year she was a varsity cheerleader, starred in the senior class play, and was Prelude proofreader.
    First winner of the pin, Phyllis Gladych '56, is now in her final year of nurses' training at Providence Hospital. After graduation she will stay at Providence for a year and then go to Wayne State University to earn a Bachelor of Science degree.

    Returns from the voting machines used in Student Council elections found Bernie Bak 314 president, Denise Abood 219 vice-president, Pam Flowers 214 secretary, and Al Korytkowski 118 treasurer.
    CSMC officers for '59-'60 are President Ken Kulinski 218 and Vice-President Marie Perham 312, Secretary Loretta Carr 314, Treasurer Dennis Meloche 116. Other officers, chairmen and committee heads, are Lillian Shynkar 314, Eleanor Grimaldi 114, Marceline Meloche 314, Marge LaVigne 116, and Marianne Zimmerman 114.
    The Girls' "A" Club elected Nancy Perreault 214, Betty Malinich 312, Joyce Joyner 115, and Joanne Juneau 114 to its offices.

Zoo Visited

On Monday, May 25, the Detroit Zoo had two busloads of enthusiastic visitors who were on a special once-a-year field trip.
The biology classes of Sister Mary Anne and Sister Anita clambered out to view, at first hand, exhibits of the animal life they have studied during the past year. Everybody—even the animals—had a good time.

    Mary Slezak 312 president, Marge Taube 118 vice-president, Sue Stano 314 secretary, and Joanne Paval 118 treasurer were elected by the Future Teachers' Club.
    In the Future Nurses' Club Lorraine Wesolowski 219 will preside, Jackie Jaster 219 will be secretary and Sandra Fuciarelli 120 treasurer.
     Sodality officers are Prefect Louis Mascia 115, Vice-Prefect Adrienne Kress 219, Secretary Delphine Warehall 120, and Treasurer Bob Vanden Brook 118.

SSCA Invites
Teens, Adults

For a truly unforgettable six days, teachers and students are invited to attend the Chicago Summer School of Catholic Action during the last week of August. With headquarters at the Conrad Hilton Hotel, the SSCA holds sessions in teen problems, Catholic beliefs, and group working.
Classes are conducted by the staff of the National Sodality Service Center and priests from all over the US and Canada.

    "Our Free Northern Border," the longest unarmed border in the world, is the theme of the 1959 International Freedom Festival, to be held in Detroit and other major border cities of the US and Canada.
    The festival, continuing from June 28 through July 4, co-ordinates various activities with different days, including an Armed Forces Day.
    "The thematic basis is to be a dramatic and inspirational symbol to the troubled world," explains the festival's committee of education.
    The celebration includes Canada's Dominion Day and Independence Day in the US.
    In order to publicize the festival a poster and essay contest is being sponsored. Awards consist of $25 defense bonds.

Girls Speedy
at Dictation

Pat Zaieski 215, Laurine Spear 215, Marsha Buda 215, Judy Adams 218, and Sara Young 218 earned shorthand awards this month for taking dictation at 120 words a minute.
In Shorthand I eight girls made 100 words a minute: Sue Stano 314, Gayle Wiesmiller 214, Kathy Joswick 219, Beverly Lange 312, Donna Fodell 312, Alma Ghosen 214, Loretta Carr 314, and Sharon Perez 219.

   "Since winning the award, I've gained a better outlook on people and how to accept them," asserts Miss Gladych.
    "From receiving the D. A. Lord Award, I have achieved a degree of insight into the qualities that go with the award in other people," feels Bob Mueller '57. "It cushions the shock when you go out into the world."
    Bob, whose ambition is to become a physicist, is now working at the Associated Business Agency and is attending radio-electronics-television school at night. When he graduates in another year, he hopes to resume study at U. of D.
    Mary Ann Skiba, last year's winner, is studying at St. Catherine's College in Racine, Wisconsin, to become a Dominican nun.

Summer Chorus
Attracts 4

     "It may be a step to greater heights," comments Chris Wrosch 217.
     He, along with Kathy Mazzoline 217, Denise Abood 219, and Dick Kordos 217, will be members of the Civic Center summer chorus, directed by Mr. Pat Teevan.
     The chorus is part of the Detroit Department of Parks and Recreation summer stock program, and will perform in places like Belle Isle, Ford Auditorium, Windsor, and the Veterans' Memorial Building.

    Cap and Gown day, Monday, was highlighted by the presentation of awards to outstanding seniors. After the program, parents traditionally are invited by the graduates to lunch with them.
    Tuesday, June 2, is Senior Skip Day. Most seniors plan to picnic at Kensington Park. Others will stay home and enjoy their day "oft".
    The morning after the picnic all will attend Holy Mass with Communion. Following Mass, the Senior Breakfast will be served in the school cafeteria.
    Friday evening, 8:30 p.m., seniors will don their caps and gowns for the Cap and Gown Dance. The dance, held in the gym, will be their last.
    Sunday at 4 o'clock, graduation exercises will be held in church, where the Rev. Leonard Kostka, C.PP.S. will address the graduates on their day.

A former St. Anthony student, Father Kostka studied at St. Charles Seminary, Cathagena, Ohio, and was

ordained in 1940.
    He is now religious superior of priests and brothers at St. Joseph College, Collegeville, Indiana, where he teaches theology.

Nuns Receive
Study Grants
    "Sharpening up" for their science and math classes next year, S. M. Anita, S. M. Agnese, and S. M. Joel have accepted government grants to study in three different states during the summer.
    Sister Anita is "extremely ' pleased and grateful" for the chance to study biology at Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire.
    Sister Agnese expects to travel cross-country to Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles to learn modern approaches to physics. Last summer she studied chemistry in Montana.
    Here in Michigan at the University of Detroit, Sister Joel will have what she calls "a wonderful opportunity to gain an insight into the modern movements in math."
    The National Science Foundation opens its grants to any teacher of math or science who wishes to apply. Last summer S. M. De Pazzi received one to the University of Notre Dame.

Bratke Wins Grant

Placing first in the examination, Laurine Bratke 218 won one of the $300 Blue Cross nursing scholarships given in Michigan.
Laurine, who has maintained an A average throughout grade and high school, plans to take her training at St. Joseph Mercy Nursing School on Grand Boulevard.
